Keep in mind my focus is on employees near or in their retirement years, The 5yr covariance matrix for this portfolio indicates the Balanced portfolio 5yr STD was reduced (not increased) from 2.74% to 1.80% as a result of diversification provided in large part by company stock VFC. It is the only equity option in the Balanced portfolio for this 5yr period 2007-2011. Interesting.
