El Paso 401k (RSP) Plan PSDS Scan 12/31/2008

The El Paso employee portfolio was heavily invested in company stock, EP, which had been doing very well but then lost 53.9% in 2008. The Balanced portfolio is invested almost entirely in PTTRX and an INVECO stable value fund represented by Fund G, the US Governement stable value fund.

COMCAST 401k Plan PSDS Scan 12/31/2008

The COMCAST scan was a nice surprise. The plan does not have a stable value fund but it does have several government securities funds DRGBX, LEXNX, STVSX including a money market fund GVIXX. They made for a nice Balanced portfoilo in an ugly market. The employee portfolio was hurt by company stock, CMCSK, and a growth fund.

State of Michigan 401k Plan PSDS Scan 12/31/2008

State of South Carolina 401k PSDS Scan 12/31/2008

The State of South Carolina 401k plan uses SSgA Target Retirement Funds which do not yet have five year data. The scan used the proxies RRTIX for CM3E, RRTAX for CM3F, RRTBX for CM3G, RRTCX for CM6X and RRTDX for CM6Y. Their 401k plan also has an unspecifed stable value fund repesented by the US Government 401k stable value fund, FUND G. All other 401k funds are in the scan using their Ticker symbols conveniently posted on the web by the plan. It would be great if FUND G were available in all 401k plans.

Re 3/21/2010 comments - There is a technote ELS 2010-1 that has T.Rowe Price TRRAX data and the State of South Carolina retirement system web site has pie charts for the SSgA target date retirement funds. Most funds with Ticker symbols have their holdings available at Yahoo finance and other financial sites.

Boeing 401k (VSP) Plan PSDS Scan 12/31/2008

The Boeing 401k scan is based on 12/31/2007 SEC 11-k data and court documents related to an ERISA case. The Master fund trustee is State Street Bank and Trust. The mutual funds in the plan are only identified by their generic catagory and where possible I used the SSgA fund for each catagory. Very few had 5yr data so you will see mostly proxies in the correlation chart. Since the stable value fund is so important I spent time looking at the SSgA stable value fund data before selecting the US Government FUND G stable value fund as a proxy. Boeing stock is in the scan with a 5yr APR = -14.78 and STD = 35.2.

DuPont 401k (RSP) Plan PSDS Scan 12/31/2008

The DuPont 401k (RSP) Plan does not have a stable value or money market fund. It does have a large master trust with bond like performance. This results in the Balanced portfolio having a high standard deviation risk. The employee asset allocation is from the 12/31/2007 SEC 11-k.

Dell 401k Plan PSDS Scan 12/31/2008

This scan included Dell stock and the plan's stable value fund represented by Morley Financial's stable value fund. The employees had about 10% their money invested in the stock as of the 12/31/2007 SEC 11-k filing.

Amgen 401k (RSP) Plan PSDS Scan 12/31/2008

The Amgen plan 3D scan image is skewed to the right (higher STDs) for the high Sharpe ratio portfolios. That is because only two funds had positive 5yr Sharpe ratios and the emerging market fund, DRPEX, was one of them. The McKinley interntional growth portfolio is an SMA portfolio in the plan and represented in the scan by VWIGX. The employees have 8.9% of their 401k money invested in company stock, AMGN, which is down -1.34% on a 5y APR basis. The 11-k data are dated 12/31/2007.

Genentech 401k Plan PSDS Scan 12/31/2008

The Genentech 401k scan has company stock, DNA, in the scan. The company stock has a 5yr return of 12.13% with a standard deviation of 34.9%. This is one case where some younger employees might want more DNA than the Balanced portfolio contains. In any event the 11-k 12/31/2007 employee asset allocation needs work in my opinion.

Texas Instruments 401k PSDS Scan 12/31/2008

Texas Instruments uses Northern Trust and Barclays Global Investors SMA funds and company stock, TXN. I used several ETF funds as proxys for the SMA funds; AGG for an aggregate bond index fund, IWD for a Russell 1000 value equity fund, IWD for a Russell 3000 growth fund, IWM for a Russell 2000 equity index fund and EFA for an international equity fund. The employees have most of their 401k money in company stock which is down -11.3% on a 5yr APR basis. Only two funds are in the Balanced portfolio, NOFIX and AGG.

General Mills 401k Plan PSDS Scan 12/31/2008

This scan is of the Schwab self directed PCRA option. The company stock, GIS, is the best investment option in the plan which is a nice change. There were only three funds with positive 5yr Sharpe ratios. There are also 16 SMA investment options in the plan like the Northrop Grumman SMA funds but I could not find 2008 data for the 16 General Mills Funds.

Wal-Mart 401k (PSP) Plan PSDS Scan 12/31/2008

Wal-Mart employees have about $4B invested in company stock, WMT, while the Balanced fund by rule only has money in funds with positive 5y Sharpe ratios. In this plan they are AIEVX, AEPGX and PTTRX. The plan also has large amounts invested in GICs and trusts that were not in the scan. Given the large 2008 recession market losses this plan has done well. The 11-k data are from their 1/31/2008 filing which is Wal-Mart's fiscal year end.

Ford 401k Plan PSDS Scan 12/31/2008

The scan does not include company stock, F. VMMXX is a proxy for a CIT interest income fund, EFA is proxy for BIG EAFE Equity Index, VEXMX is a proxy for a CIT fund and DODIX is a proxy for a CIT bond fund. The ticker symbols are all in the correlation chart.

GE 401k Plan PSDS Scan 12/31/2008

This is the parent GE 401k plan and the employees are very heavy into GE company stock. That has reduced their 5yr return to -5.03%. At least as of the 12/31/2007 SEC 11-k filing. Even though the portfolio has only a few funds and GE is down there is a Balanced portfolio with a modest positive return thanks to VMMXX. This is a proxy for their Short-Term Money Markets Instruments. The plan could use a few more positive 5yr Sharpe ratio options.

GE ITI 401k Plan PSDS Scan 12/31/2008

Two of the GE Funds in the ITI portfolio, GEMXX and GEISX, do not have 5yr data yet. I used the Vanguard money market fund VMMXX for GEMXX and DODIX for GESIX. The company stock of GE is down 9.26% on a 5yr APR basis. Employee asset allocations came from the 12/31/2007 SEC 11-k report.

Lowes 401k Plan PSDS Scan 12/31/2008

The Lowes employees had most of their money in company stock in 12/31/2007 the latest SEC 11-K data and it put them in the hole. There are only two funds in the Balanced portfolio AEPGX and VMMXX a proxy for a money market fund and their Met Life annuity contract.
