Cameron International 401k (RSP) PSDS Scan 12/31/2008

This plan was helped by company stock, CAM, another oil and gas services company. If I were younger investing 31.9% of my money in company stock would be my choice too which is what the employees have invested in CAM as of 12/31/2008. The Balanced portfolio has only 2.1% there and 90% in the stable value fund represented by the index SVF.hpx in the scan.

The money market fund SSMXX was represted by FDRXX and the SSgA target retirment funds were represented by their matching Fidelity funds which have 5yr data. The company stock, CSC, had a negative 5yr APR 0f -4.52% and the employee portfolio as of 12/31/2008 had 19.3% of their money in the stock.

American Electric Power - Roth 401k Plan Scan 12/31/2008

This is the first Roth 401k plan I have seen among the S&P 500 companies. It got my attention. The participant directed investments are over $2.3B dollars as of 12/31/2008. The plan is large and the SEC11-k document is long, 45 pages long. The plan investments exceeding 5% were AEP company stock $268M, EB Daily Liquidity Aggregate Bond Index Fund $267M, EB Daily Liquidity Stock Index Fund $277M, EB Daily Liquidity International Stock Index Fund $165M and an Intermediate Term Bond Fund $728M. In the scan these were AEP, MCM.agg, MCM.stx, MCM.efa, and VBIIX.

The above catagories include hundreds of individual stocks and mutual funds. I slected 16 of the mutual funds to include with the above catagory investments to be able to compare the large catagory (5%) investment performance with familiar individual mutual fund investements. Note that individual mutual funds account for only $33M of the $2.3B dollar plan. As you can see in the 3D scan asset allocation only two of the large catagory investments MCM.agg and VBIIX are in the Balanced portfolio.

Brunswick 401k (RSP) Plan PSDS Scan 12/31/2008

The Balanced portoflio has 81.3% of the money in the stable value fund VRST and 10.1% in the money market fund VMMXX. Company stock BC has a 5yr APR of -32.04% the worst I have seen in a S&P500 company still in business. All in all this is a good plan and the employee portfolio has a 5yr APR of 1.05%.

Kohl's Dept. Stores 401k (SP) PSDS Scan 12/31/2008

The plan has a stable value fund, SVF.hpx in the scan, and that is where the Balanced portfolio put 88.6% of the money. The largest employee holding as of 2/2/2008 was AGTHX which had a very bad 2008 like most growth funds. The SSgA Target Retirement funds do not yet have 5yr data and they were represented by their corresponding Fidelity Freedom funds in the scan.

Watson Pharmaceuticals 401k Plan 12/31/2008

Another "lifeboat' Balanced portfolio with 92.9% invested in the stable value fund VRST in the scan. Vanguard's Retirement Savings Trust (VRST) has a very high Sharpe ratio of 9.3. The employee portfolio also has VRST as its largest holding but less than 40%. In the scan MDY was a proxy for VMGIX which does not yet have 5yr data. Also, only the Target Retirment funds with 5yr data are in the scan.

NY Times 401k (RIP) Plan PSDS Scan 12/31/2008

This plan has no money in company stock, NYT, which is good. However, the employee portfolio as of 12/31/2008 had almost no money in the Vanguard Prime Money Market Fund, VMMXX, which was not so good. The Balanced portfolio has 79.5% of the money invested in this fund and that portfolio has a modest positive 5yr APR 0f 3.82%. The employee portfolio had a negative 5yr APR 0f -0.22%. In the scan VEIEX is a proxy for XEMFX.
