Prudential Financial 401k (ESP) Plan Scan 12/31/2008


















This plan was not helped by company stock. The employees as of 12/31/2008 had over 50% of their money in the money market fund, FDRXX in the scan. The Balanced portfolio had 42.5% in that fund and most of the rest in two bond funds, Prudential core bond enhanced index (PRU.pim) and a Fidelity governemnt income fund, FGOVX in the scan. The Prudential core bond index is a SMA investement as is PRU.lsv in the scan.

Praxair 401k (RSP) Plan PSDS Scan 12/31/2008





















Another plan helped by company stock, PX, and the Balanced portfolio invested 4.2% of the plan in the stock. The employees as of 12/31/2008 had 37.2% of the plan in company stock. The plan has a good stable value fund, a Fidelity Managed Income Portfolio FMIP in the scan. The artificially high Sharpe ratio of FMIP resulted in a "lifeboat" Balanced portfolio with 75.5% of the plan in the stable value fund.

Automated Data Processing 401k Plan PSDS Scan 12/31/2008


















This is a small plan without stable value investment options. The money market fund SBCXX is represented by VMMXX in the scan. The Balanced portfolio has 58.58% invested in the money market fund. The JP Morgan target retirement funds, JTTAX etc., do not yet have 5yr data and are represented in the scan by the corresponding Fidelity funds. The employee portfolio as of 12/31/2007 had a negative 5yr return, APR = -0.61%.

Whirlpool 401k (RP) Plan PSDS Scan 12/31/2008


















The last few scans have been for 12/31/2008 SEC 11-k data and a definite trend is showing up. The employee portfolios are moving to the stable value fund which is consistent with the Hewitt 401k index data. The Balanced portfolio and the employee portfolio are a little closer. This plan uses the Vanguard Retirement Savings Trust, VRST, stable value fund.

Stanley Works 401k (AVP) Plan PSDS Scan 12/31/2008


















Another "lifeboat" Balanced portfolio with over 90% of the plan invested in the stable value fund, FUNDG, in the scan and the money market fund, VMMXX, in the scan. The plan is small and with mostly State Street funds in the scan that include SMA funds. Several do not yet have 5yr data and the proxies in the plan are VMMXX for the money market fund, FUNDG for the stable value fund and TIP for a passive TIPS fund.

XCEL Energy 401k (SP) Plan PSDS Scan 12/31/2008


















This plan is similar to the last but without the stable value fund and with a few non Vanguard funds. The Balanced portfolio largest investment is the money market fund, VMMXX, at 46.6% as of 12/31/2008. The employee portfolio's largest investment is company stock, XEL, which had a nice 5yr APR of 6.27%. Their 5yr APR was only 2.52% largely because of 2008. They had over 50% invested in equity funds.

Smith International 401k (RP) Plan PSDS Scan 12/31/2008

















This is an all Vanguard plan and has a very good stable value fund, the Vanguard Retirement Savings Trust. The Balanced portfolio has 71.2% of the plan invested in it and the rest in six other bond/treasury index funds. The employee portfolio is more diversified and has a positive 5yr return of 2%. Company stock, SII, is very volatile.
