My interest is in scanning 401k portfolios to image the efficient frontier and highlite portfolios that have high risk adjusted returns. The portfolio with highest Sharpe ratio will appear in the scan image for each 401k plan posted.

Principal Financial Group 401k (SSP) Plan PSDS Scan 12-31-2010
The Principal Financial Group 401k investment options are company mutual funds and company stock neither of which have done especially well the last 5 years. Company stock PFG has a negative 5yr return and is not in the Balanced portfolio, which has a 5yr APR of 5.08% with a positive Sharpe ratio of 0.38. That portfolio's 3 largest holdings are PIXEX, VUSTX a proxy for PGSPX (no 5yr data yet) and PBMJX. The employee portfolio 3 largest holdings are PSPJX, PIIJX and PIXEX and that portfolio has 5yr APR of 2.64% with a Sharpe ratio of 0.10. This plan could use more diversification in my opinion to provide employees with retirement options independent of the company. That would be prudent.
